Highlights included Ethel Smith, a competitor transplanted from Maryland, who carefully babied an Ice Wings in warm water overnight to get the second and third florets to open, only to discover that an eagled-eyed judge could only find 4 petals on each one. She hadn't noticed in her glee over getting them to open at all!

Another interesting regionalism: Mike Berrigan and Nancy Pilipuf had traded bulbs two years ago. Nancy won the Gold at the Bertrand Barn Show with the one from Mike and Mike won the Gold in Minnesota's Show with the one from Nancy this year. I think there is a lesson there. . . .

Mike Berrigan tried very hard to not win the Silver Ribbon this year: of 128 blue ribbons awarded, he took 29. There were four people pushing him, however, Margaret Macneale with 16, Kathy Julius and Ethel Smith both with 18 and me with 25. Every exhibitor took home at least one blue ribbon!

Kathy Julius would have had many more blues, but she went for her first Quinn Collection. And very well done. Our weather was not the most cooperative for having show-quality blooms on time for the show, let alone enough for both collection and single-stem entries!

I think we set a record for collections entered in a Minnesota Show! 43 standard collections plus 3 miniature collections were entered. Not only did Janis Ruksans Latvian flowers win the Any Other Single Country collection, but his flowers won the All White Color collection (with 2 other competitors)! Vases of three were also strong again this year.

Pictures should be available shortly of the flowers that survived the heat on Sunday. A new member drove up from Ft. Dodge, Iowa, to our show, stayed with some friends in a southern suburb of the Twin Cities, and convinced the friends to show flowers next year! Hats off to Erland and Elaine Carlson!

Three people total joined our group during the 2-day show at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Our show committee put up signs around the Arboretum which increased the traffic to our show on the balcony--more people said they finally found us!

Group Challenge classes included a fun "Cheap Collection" of flowers costing less than $5 in any recent catalog. Of course, the prize for that class was dues paid for one year! Margaret Macneale won it, but I doubt whether that will significantly increase the size of her Ringhaddy or Mitsch order this year!
